🏔️ Brocken – the king of the Harz
With 1141 meters the Brocken the highest peak in northern Germany. The climb is tough, but the view is amazing. The gravel route up via Schierke is a classic – steep, rugged and unforgettable.
🌄 Harzer-Hexen-Stieg
Officially a hiking trail, but largely perfect for riding with a gravel bike. You wind through forests, over wooden bridges and past reservoirs – pure Harz gravel magic.
⛏️Old mine routes at Clausthal-Zellerfeld
The Harz was once an important mining area. The old transport paths are now wonderful gravel routes where nature and history come together.

Best travel time and tips for your gravel trip
The best period for cycling in the Harz is from May to October. In winter there is often snow, especially above 800 meters.
Take a bike with wide tires (minimum 40 mm) and good resistance – sometimes climbs are surprisingly tough.
And a nice tip: the Harzde narrow gauge line, a historic steam train, runs straight through the area – ideal for a rest day or to skip part of your route.
